Mindfulness meditation is often described as a way to stay focused on the present moment. But new research suggests that one of its more interesting effects may happen after attention has already wandered: becoming aware that the mind has drifted and bringing it back.
A study published in Scientific Reports on August 13, 2026, examined what happens to the heart and eyes during different stages of breath-focused mindfulness meditation. Researchers Sara Sorella, Alessio Matiz and Cristiano Crescentini from the University of Udine and affiliated institutions compared 28 experienced meditators with 28 people who did not practice meditation.
The researchers did not simply ask participants whether they felt more attentive. They tracked heart rate and eye movements while participants moved through four distinct attentional states: mind-wandering, awareness of distraction, shifting attention back to the breath, and sustained focus.
The results suggest that experienced meditators may respond to distraction differently. Their heart rate remained more stable during sustained attention, their eye movements were lower overall, and their ability to recognize their own mind-wandering episodes appeared to correspond more closely with externally prompted reports.
That does not mean meditation prevents the mind from wandering. Instead, the findings point toward a potentially more important skill: noticing when attention has wandered and returning to the present without becoming overly reactive.
Mind-Wandering Is Not Simply A Failure Of Concentration
Everyone’s attention drifts.
A person can begin focusing on their breathing and, seconds later, find themselves thinking about an unfinished email, an upcoming appointment, a conversation from yesterday or something they need to buy.
Traditional descriptions of meditation can make this seem like a mistake. Contemporary research takes a different view.
Mind-wandering is a normal feature of human cognition. It can involve spontaneous thoughts unrelated to the immediate environment, but it can also be deliberate, such as intentionally planning a future task.
The important distinction for mindfulness research is therefore not simply whether the mind wanders, but what happens when someone becomes aware of it.
The new study focuses directly on this transition. The researchers describe focused meditation as a dynamic cycle involving mind-wandering (MW), awareness of distraction (AWARE), shifting attention back (SHIFT), and sustained attentional focus (FOCUS).
That framework changes the way mindfulness can be understood.
Rather than expecting uninterrupted concentration, meditation becomes a repeated exercise in detecting attentional drift, recognizing it and redirecting attention.
For people exploring mindfulness techniques, that distinction may be more useful than the idea that successful meditation requires an empty mind.
What The Researchers Actually Measured
The study was conducted by Sara Sorella, Alessio Matiz and Cristiano Crescentini, with the researchers affiliated primarily with the University of Udine in Italy. Matiz also has an affiliation with Università degli Studi Link Campus University in Rome.

The researchers wanted to understand whether experienced mindfulness practitioners show different physiological patterns while noticing and responding to mind-wandering.
To do that, they combined two types of measurement.
The first was heart rate. Because heart activity can change with shifts in attention and arousal, it provides a physiological window into what is happening while someone moves between mental states.
The second involved ocular movements, allowing the researchers to examine changes in eye behavior during attentional transitions.
This combination is important because mind-wandering is an internal cognitive process that cannot always be observed directly.
A participant might say, “I was thinking about something else,” but researchers also want to know whether the body was doing anything measurable around that transition.
The study therefore connects subjective reports with physiological observations rather than relying exclusively on questionnaires.
The Study Compared 28 Meditators With 28 Controls
The sample consisted of 56 participants in total.
Half—28 participants—were experienced meditators, while the other 28 were non-meditating controls. All participants completed breath-focused meditation tasks while researchers monitored heart rate and eye movements.
This comparison allowed the researchers to ask whether meditation experience was associated with different physiological responses during the attentional cycle.
The distinction between experienced practitioners and controls is important, but it also limits how far the findings can be generalized.
The study does not establish that anyone who begins meditating will immediately develop the same physiological patterns.
It instead identifies differences associated with meditation expertise.
That leaves a major question for future research: Are these characteristics produced by meditation practice, or are people with certain attentional and physiological tendencies more likely to become experienced meditators?
The current study cannot fully answer that causal question.
The Researchers Used Two Ways To Detect Mind-Wandering
One of the most interesting methodological features was the use of self-caught and probe-caught mind-wandering.
In the self-caught approach, participants were expected to notice on their own when their attention had moved away from the breath.
In the probe-caught approach, researchers interrupted the meditation and asked participants to report their current attentional state.
These methods capture different aspects of awareness.
Self-caught episodes tell researchers about moments when people spontaneously recognize their own distraction.
Probe-caught episodes tell researchers what was happening when researchers specifically asked participants to examine their attention.
The difference is subtle but important.
A person can be mind-wandering without realizing it. The ability to recognize that state is itself a form of meta-awareness.
Mindfulness practice may therefore involve more than sustaining attention. It may also involve becoming better at recognizing the moment attention has moved elsewhere.
That idea has been central to previous research by members of the same research group.
The Heart Responded Differently In Experienced Meditators
The heart-rate findings were particularly revealing.
During the self-caught paradigm, researchers found a significant group-by-phase interaction, with p = .017. Heart rate increased during the sustained-focus phase in the control group, while the experienced meditators showed a more stable pattern.

The meditators’ heart rate also showed a negative association with the mindfulness dimension known as non-judging during the awareness phase.
The reported Bayesian evidence for this relationship was BF10 = 12.91, which the researchers interpreted as evidence supporting an association between the physiological response and non-judgmental awareness.
This does not mean meditation practitioners have universally lower heart rates.
The finding is more specific.
It suggests that how experienced meditators respond physiologically while recognizing distraction may differ from how non-meditators respond.
That distinction is critical because mindfulness is not simply about achieving a particular heart rate.
The study is concerned with the relationship between physiological activity and changes in attentional state.
Eye Movements Became More Active When Attention Shifted
The eye data added another layer.
Eye movements increased particularly during the SHIFT phase—the point at which participants moved their attention back toward the breath. This effect was statistically significant in both groups, with p < .001.
At the same time, experienced meditators displayed lower overall eye-movement activity in both the self-caught and probe-caught paradigms.
The group differences were statistically significant, with reported p-values of .002 or lower.
This is interesting because the researchers were not using eye movements as a simple measure of whether someone was “focused.”
Instead, the eye data provided another physiological correlate of the transitions between mental states.
When attention shifted back toward the breath, eye movements increased.
Experienced meditators, however, generally exhibited lower ocular activity.
The findings suggest that the transition from distraction back to focus may have a measurable bodily signature.
That does not mean someone can determine whether another person is mind-wandering simply by watching their eyes.
The differences emerged under controlled experimental conditions and should not be treated as a practical diagnostic tool.
Experienced Meditators Were Better Aligned Across Measurement Methods
Another finding involved the relationship between self-caught and probe-caught episodes.
Only the experienced meditators showed a significant positive correlation between the number of episodes they noticed themselves and the number identified through researcher probes.
The reported Bayesian evidence was extremely strong, with BF10 = 860.42.
This result may be especially relevant to the concept of meta-awareness.
If someone is consistently aware when their attention wanders, their own reports may correspond more closely with externally prompted assessments.
That could indicate greater sensitivity to changes in their own attentional state.
In practical terms, the skill being trained may not be “never lose focus.”
It may be closer to:
Lose focus → notice it → return → continue.
That cycle can happen repeatedly during a meditation session.
And from the perspective of mindfulness training, the moment of noticing may be just as important as the period of concentration that follows.
Mindfulness May Change The Response To Distraction
The researchers describe their results as suggesting that mindfulness expertise is associated with more regulated and less reactive meta-awareness of distraction.
That phrase is more cautious than saying meditation eliminates mind-wandering.
It also fits with a growing body of research showing that mindfulness and mind-wandering have complicated relationships.
A 2025 study by Sorella, Crescentini, Matiz, Minah Chang and Alessandro Grecucci examined resting-state brain networks in 76 participants and reported relationships between spontaneous mind-wandering, mindfulness skills and temporal variability in the default mode network.
The researchers have therefore been examining the question from several directions: brain networks, physiological responses and the subjective experience of noticing distraction.
This broader research program matters because mind-wandering is not necessarily harmful.
It can support planning, creativity and problem-solving.
The problem arises when attention wanders at an inappropriate time or becomes difficult to regulate.
Mindfulness may be useful precisely because it trains people to recognize that shift.
The Goal May Not Be To Stop Thoughts
One of the biggest misconceptions about meditation is that successful practice requires stopping thoughts.
The new research points toward a different interpretation.
During focused meditation, thoughts can appear. Attention can move away from the breath. The participant can become aware of that movement and then redirect attention.
That means the appearance of a distracting thought is not necessarily evidence that the meditation session has failed.
In fact, it creates an opportunity to practice the very skill being studied.
This is consistent with how focused-attention meditation is commonly conceptualized in scientific research: attention is directed toward a chosen object, distraction occurs, awareness of the distraction develops and attention is redirected.
The repeated return is part of the exercise.
That perspective can also make meditation more approachable.
Someone who spends ten minutes thinking about work during a meditation session may assume they have accomplished nothing.
From a mindfulness-training perspective, however, every moment of recognizing “my mind has wandered” can represent another opportunity to practice meta-awareness.
The Heart And Eyes Provide A New Way To Study Attention
The importance of the study extends beyond meditation.
Researchers are increasingly interested in how cognition is reflected across multiple systems simultaneously.
Attention is not purely a brain event disconnected from the rest of the body.
Changes in attention can accompany shifts in heart activity, eye behavior, breathing and other physiological processes.
The 2026 study illustrates why combining measurements can be valuable.
Heart rate provided one physiological signal. Eye movements provided another. Participants’ reports supplied information about their subjective experience.
When those sources are analyzed together, researchers can begin asking more detailed questions about when attention changes and how people recognize those changes.
For mindfulness research, that may be particularly useful.
Instead of asking whether meditation “works,” researchers can examine the specific stages through which attention moves.
That creates a more precise scientific target.
What The Study Does Not Prove
The findings are intriguing, but they should not be exaggerated.
The study involved only 56 people, divided equally between experienced meditators and non-meditating controls. It was observational with respect to meditation expertise rather than a randomized trial assigning people to years of meditation practice.
Therefore, the study cannot prove that meditation caused the physiological differences.
It also focused on breath-based meditation in a controlled research environment.
Real-world attention is considerably more complicated.
Someone sitting in traffic, studying for an exam or handling a difficult conversation may experience very different forms of mind-wandering.
The study also does not demonstrate that meditation prevents anxiety, depression or other mental-health conditions.
The researchers describe potential implications for maladaptive thought patterns and mental health, but those implications require additional research.
That distinction is especially important when interpreting neuroscience findings.
A measurable physiological difference is not automatically a clinical benefit.
Why Meta-Awareness Could Matter For Mental Health
The potential mental-health relevance comes from the way people respond to their own thoughts.
Mind-wandering itself is not necessarily pathological.
But repetitive negative thinking, rumination and intrusive thought patterns can become difficult when a person becomes caught in them without recognizing what is happening.
A skill that allows someone to notice, “I am no longer focused on what I intended to focus on,” could theoretically create space between the thought and the person’s reaction to it.
Mindfulness research has explored this possibility for years.
The 2021 systematic review The Impact of Mindfulness Meditation on the Wandering Mind, for example, examined evidence concerning mindfulness meditation and mind-wandering across previous studies.
The new research adds something different by connecting subjective attentional states with heart rate and eye movements.
That makes the question more physiological:
What does the body do when the mind notices that the mind has wandered?
The answer appears to depend, at least partly, on meditation experience.
The Most Interesting Finding May Be The Return
The most useful way to interpret this research may be to focus less on distraction itself and more on the return to attention.
The researchers identified a sequence:
Mind-wandering → awareness → attention shift → sustained focus.
The eye-movement findings were particularly pronounced during the SHIFT phase, while heart-rate patterns differed between experienced meditators and controls.
That makes the return to the breath more than a routine instruction.
It becomes a measurable behavioral and physiological event.
For someone practicing mindfulness, this suggests a practical change in mindset.
The goal does not have to be maintaining perfect concentration for ten, fifteen or twenty minutes.
Instead, the practice can be viewed as repeatedly recognizing where attention has gone and gently returning it.
That may be one reason mindfulness continues to attract researchers interested in attention regulation.
Where The Research Goes Next
The next step will be determining whether the differences observed in experienced meditators actually emerge through training.
A randomized longitudinal study could assign people with little or no meditation experience to structured mindfulness training and compare them with an active control group over weeks or months.
Researchers could then repeatedly measure heart rate, eye movements, brain activity and self-reported mind-wandering.
That design would help distinguish practice effects from pre-existing differences.
Future studies could also examine whether changes in meta-awareness translate into measurable improvements in everyday attention, rumination, stress regulation or emotional well-being.
The current findings provide a useful foundation, but they do not settle those questions.
What they do show is that mind-wandering is not simply an invisible mental event.
When researchers carefully track the body while attention moves away from the breath and then returns, measurable patterns begin to emerge.
For mindfulness science, that is an important shift.
The next time attention wanders during meditation, the most scientifically interesting moment may not be the distraction itself.
It may be the instant you realize it happened—and what your mind and body do next.
